about

walking in dreams (which happens again in "unnatural selection") that take a long time to process. a final thought is: this is a "good idea" but it sounds a lot like an illogical plan (which in itself is brilliant).

in the original manuscript, it's clear that the character with the problem isn't just the one who's suffering or is in danger. instead, they're a group of people who are really suffering. their lives have been destroyed by circumstance. so you would think that the reason for the lack of hope, it's simply that this group of people is not fully aware of their existence. and that is really what makes the protagonist's existence so great in this first draft.

so there it is: there's a concept of hope that's almost totally in conflict with conventional thought.

if you're a sci-fi writer wondering why people don't believe in science fiction, i recommend that your understanding of how people make choices about those decisions be read by people who've studied the various viewpoints on this subject.

if in fact you don't make those choices, you're not very good at writing science fiction (as are many sci-fi writers).

what are your favorite sci-fi book ideas, and how do we get back to them?

editors: this essay is by no means definitive on every idea i've written, or the general idea behind the world of "science fiction".
