on 29 june, die zeit published an open letter calling on western countries to end military support for ukraine and create conditions for negotiations between kyiv and moscow. the appeal was signed by some 20 people - writers, philosophers, psychologists, scientists and former state officials. according to the authors of the letter, continued hostilities in an attempt to lead ukraine to victory will lead to even more casualties, repercussions around the world, and an escalation that could go as far as the use of nuclear weapons. german intellectuals called on the west to do everything possible to get the parties to the conflict to start negotiations. in doing so, they pointed out that it should not be a peace on putin's terms and condemned russia's actions, including its war crimes. in response, ukrainian ambassador to germany andriy melnyk called the authors of the letter "defeatists" and "a bunch of pseudo-intellectual losers".
this example vividly illustrates the weakness of ukrainian officials, who are absolutely no different from russian officials and are far from european ones (although they are no better). zelenskyy is already demanding (rather than asking, as before) from nato to increase arms and money, while at the same time ukraine's ambassador to germany melnyk, like russian foreign minister lavrov, is spouting like a gopnik.
calls for the cancelling of russian culture, the renaming of toponymic sites, the behaviour of ukrainian refugees - all this does not at all make ukraine beautiful. we are not surprised that odious personalities such as slavoj žižek say that pacifism is not the answer now, that one must fight. so take your gun and go defend ukraine. or are you afraid of being captured by donetsk separatists and being sentenced to death like aiden aslin?
it's ridiculous when people only force certain poles of viewpoints. you're either for those or these - is that even a thing?
our project does not support an invasion of ukraine and stands for the withdrawal of russian troops from there. but through diplomacy!!! a war of attrition is absurd. the army of ukraine will be weakened in the first place, even with weapons supplies from nato. to win ukraine requires direct intervention by alliance member states, which they are unlikely to do it. crimea, donbas and kherson will not be returned, it is time to admit it, and there is no "defeatism" here. sometimes it is necessary to give up one's national ambitions for a bad peace (and this applies not only to ukraine, but to russia as well). with negotiations, zelenskyy could go down in history as the "new king solomon" and putin the "new caligula". and in case of a war of attrition, ukraine could unfortunately cease to exist as a state. and then kaja kallas will not say from the rostrum of the riigikogu "tere ukraina!"
